St. Michael Jackson Epitaph

This Deserves some Text.

In the world of Music, there is Michael Jackson, and there are others.

“Jackson is the biggest thing since The Beatles. He is the hottest single phenomenon since Elvis Presley. He just may be the most popular black singer ever”.
The Time Magazine

Hailed rightfully as The King of Pop, Michael Jackson was an unstoppable juggernaut, in possession of all the tools to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility and loads of sheer star power. Michael Jackson rules the music world, and after his death, his strength only flourished. For something as phenomenal as Jackson does not die; something as remarkable as Jackson does not vanish; something as memorable as Jackson only stays on in the hearts of people, becoming more prominent, more prudent, more significant with every passing moment. Jackson is to the fans of music what God is to those who believe; a necessity which defined music, who rose above his art, the rare case where the artist surpasses the greatness of the art.

Michael was born as a little baby, unknown to the world on August 29, 1958. Michael died as the best selling artist of all time on June 25, 2009, his globally live broadcast memorial service attracting an audience of up to one billion people. So great is his legacy that even after death, Michael was the best selling artist of 2009 with sales in excess of 8.2 million in the United States where he became the first artist ever to have 4 of the top 20 best-selling albums in a single year, and 29 million albums globally, where he had an unprecedented 8 of the top 25 best-selling albums worldwide. Only a few people rise above the racial boundaries, the geographical map lines and the linguistic barriers as Michael did. Michael Jackson is a household name anywhere, anyplace in the world. His albums are not mere records. They are the stuff of dreams, turned to reality by The One Maestro who ropes life into music like no one else can, who delivers entertainment to the world irrespective of their cultural orientation, the one who creates beats for decades.

Michael Jackson was inducted onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984. Throughout his career he received numerous honors and awards, including the World Music Awards’ Best-Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium, the American Music Award’s Artist of the Century Award and the Bambi Pop Artist of the Millennium Award. He was a double-inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1997 and later as a solo artist in 2001. His awards include multiple Guinness World Records (eight in 2006 alone, including one for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time”), 15 Grammy Awards (including the “Living Legend Award” and the “Lifetime Achievement Award”), 26 American Music Awards (24 only as a solo artist, including one for “artist of the century”)—more than any artist—, 13 number one singles in the US in his solo career—more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era—and estimated sales of up to 750 million records worldwide, making him the world’s best selling male solo pop artist.
He was also a notable philanthropist and humanitarian who donated and raised over 300 million dollars through support of 39 charities and his own Heal the World Foundation. Winning numerous awards for his humanitarian endeavors, the singer has been honored by two Presidents of the United States. He has also been named as the artist of “the Decade”, “Generation”, “Century”, and “Millennium” and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.
The world of music lovers is divided into a two halves. Those who have heard Michael Jackson and those will. As for those who have not and do not plan to do so in near future, there is no place in the world of music. The best dancer of his era, Michael changed the definition of music videos. The Moonwalk, The Crotch, The Robot, The Lean…watching Jackson dance is watching the rainbow arrive in the sky, elegant, magical and yet so simple that it infuses sudden respect, awe and applause. Jackson’s story is one of miracles, but behind the glittering veil of stardom lies a lost childhood; a tortured boy and a scared soul. Yet Jackson lives on through his 2700 acre ranch Neverland, through his countless attempts at helping the poor and saving the earth and through his larger than life albums. Accused of child abuse and infuriated by the media, Jackson once said –

Why not just tell people I’m an alien from Mars. Tell them I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight. They’ll believe anything you say, because you’re a reporter. But if I, Michael Jackson, were to say, “I’m an alien from Mars and I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight,” people would say, “Oh, man, that Michael Jackson is nuts. He’s cracked up. You can’t believe a single word that comes out of his mouth.

It is true that Jackson did things that sounded crazy; it is true that Jackson is accused of being a lunatic. But for all his antics, Jackson has risen above the humanly notions of wrongs and rights; with every composition, Jackson challenged Racism, fought poverty through Multi Artist attempts and pleaded for a cleaner earth through songs devoted to nature.
Michael Jackson loved music. Jackson loved the stage. Jackson loves his audience and the audience loved Jackson. It was a symbiotic relationship, with Jackson giving to the crowd a reason to cheer for and the crowd giving back to Jackson what he treasured the most – love, support and admiration. Michael Jackson lives on, Thrilling the world. Before him, there was none. After him, there will be none. What struck the world in the form of Michael Jackson shall never be repeated. What struck the ears of billions through his music shall reverberate forever. The world cannot forget Michael Jackson, and no man can ever parallel his popularity, his onstage charisma, his off stage media coverage. Jackson may have departed, but his Legacy is here to stay.
