CWC Pre-Final Poetry (a little late)(quite late actually)

Filed under: Hindi, Poetry — harshveerjain @ 11:32 pm

Dilshan ho ya sangakara

Bachega nahi koi bechara

Jab gunjega yeh naara

“aaj toh run ki nadi bahegi

Aaj toh lanka yahi dhahegi”

Mendis Malina murli ki *** **

Futega jab sehwag fataka

Har awaaz ab yahi kahegi

Ab toh lanka yahai dhahegi

Bhadak uthega Sachin ka balla

Mach jaayega lanka me halla

Golden lion ki bali chadhegi

Aaj toh lanka yahi dhahegi!

Chota sa hai desh bechara

Nipat jaayega lanka saara

Pichak jayega ball ke neeche

Jab bhadak uthega desh hamara

Sardar hamara sanak padega

Yuvraj ka ghussa bhadak padega

Nehra ki har gaend yahi kahegi

Aaj toh lanka yahi dhahegi

Zaheer ki swinger todegi dande

Futenge ab lanka ke ande

Hindustaan ki tanashahi rahegi

Aaj toh lanka yahi dhahegi!

Hindi Word Games – 1

Filed under: Hindi — Tags: — Antariksh @ 2:59 am

So, seeing the deplorable absence of Hindi in our Lit Scene, I thought at least our blog could have some Hindi word games etc.

I made this stuff while sitting in the train; it’s pretty easy and doable, but I hope you enjoy.

So, the first set of questions is like the Lewis Carroll Word Ladders. In which you have to change a word into another by either adding a letter/removing one/replacing one in each step, with each intermediate word formed being a legitimate word.

In Hindi, matras and half-letters create issues, so the ground rule is that all vowel marks are assumed as part of the consonant they are attached to. So, Ka can be changed to Pee legitimately (का -> पी).

Also, all half-letters are assumed to be part of the consonant following them, and not the one preceding them.

You can post in Romanised Hindi, so that ROT13 can still be used.

zB:

रोहित ->किरण

रोहित -> हित -> रत -> रण -> किरण

Best of luck.

  • व्याकुल –> प्रसन्न
  • निंदा –> प्रशंसा
  • तारीफ़ –> बुराई
  • भारत –>महान
  • युक्ति –> सफलता
  • ज़मीन –> आसमान

They aren’t very difficult, and multiple answers are possible. I have only thought of one and smaller paths may exist for many of them.

The second set of questions has a series of consonants. They represent a famous lokokti (proverb) which has been stripped of all spaces, vowels and vowels marks. All half consonants have been converted to full consonants. All terminal nasal sounds, like the Chandra-bindu of maa.n have been removed. Nasal sounds in the middle, for example the Chandra-bindu of chaa.nd have been represented by the consonant n. All vowel sounds, for eg, the A sound of aawaaz have also been removed. The aim is to find out the proverb.

zB:

चलतकनमगड = चलती का नाम गाडी

Best of luck again!

  1. सनपभमरजरलठभनट
  2. दधकजलछछभफनकफनककरपतह
  3. जनबचतलखपलटकबदधघरक
  4. धबककततनघरकनघटक
  5. बपछतकयहतजबचडयचगगखत
  6. सरमणडतहलपड
  7. कमकनकजकदशमननजक
  8. बरनज़रवलतरमनहकल
  9. जबगदडकमततहतबवहशहरकरभगतह
  10. घरकमरगदलबरबर

Lost in translation

Filed under: Hindi — Tags: — Antariksh @ 1:02 am

Guys, me and Nikunj have prepared this one for your, erm, displeasure. Yeah, our diabolical minds think of new ways to complicate your otherwise simple lives.

Here are a few Hindi songs translated to English. You have to guess the Hindi counterparts of these verses, that is, the real songs. Giving the name would do, but just to get into the spirit, throw in a few lines too, and yeah, hum along.

All of them are hit, famous songs. Most of them are recent.

Most of the translations include the main stanza of the song. Wherever it is not so, we will point it out.

Also the verses are graded according to level of difficulty.

P.S. – We have tried to remain as accurate in translation as possible, giving due respect to the poetic verses at the same time… Hence, do not expect word to word translations, rather, look for the overall meaning. Anybody found nitpicking over this over this will be mailed a rotten egg. Anybody who dares to challenge the supremacy of the authors should include his address in the comment and we shall courier him the choicest of collectibles from Mumbai Municipality Dump.

Level 1 – Pretty Easy

1

Somewhere… Someplace…
There would be…
World in which you are my companion…

This breath, in who’s sighs, ’tis lost?

I am lost, in who’s arms, I know not

I went on using my destination to search for the way,

And the destination is lost somewhere in these paths.

2

You are my un-quenched thirst, you are the one who pleased my heart, – (2)
At least now come close to me… Its a request…

The state of my heart is tense, Come get splashed with my colours,
Just walk with me and only me… Its a request…

If you say yes then this life, will break free from the chains and laugh,
Pearls will adorn my paths…

3

In adulation, I bow to you this way,

To you I come, and then I stop

Does this happen to everybody?

What do we care about everyone else?
From now on, it is to you that I speak.
You have taken the form of my prayers,

4

Just flutter your wings,
Dust is trapped, shake it, jerk it away and wander off to far away places,
Fly road to road; to tribes and nooks; through corners and villages Oh Yayyy!
Take a groovy turn, fly in style.. Fulfill your heart’s desires
Merge with the wind, fly in style, Fly .. You’re like diamonds and emeralds.

Level 2 – Workable

1

When I saw you, I came to know, my beloved,
Love is crazy, oh beloved!
Now, where should I go from here,
In your arms, I should end my life.

2

Where there is no crowd,

Nor people of the whole world,

Nor the noise of the lakhs who stay in the city

For a few moments, take me away from them

Let’s go to our home, my soulmate – (2)

3

Your eyes, so charming

That, their lover, I have become

Seat me in them…

To me, every moment, my heart says,

You are it’s only desire

To me, every moment, my lips say,

That all my conversations be about you

Your talks, so charming, when I recall them

Like flowers, their fragrance seems…

4

[Every moment, this distance melts so

Dunno in which flames, these drops of dew burn] – (2)

An evening of aspirations sets – 2

Dunno in which flames, these drops of dew burn

5

I remained lost, in my musical harmony

Even your footsteps, I have forgotten

Since centuries, so lonely I have been,

Your love, I have forgotten

I have been tangled in this life

What should I beseech ye for, – (2)

Oh lord…

Where should I go…

In every despair, in this life

I have loved just you, always asked for you

Through the paths that this heart traveled

I didn’t achieve my destination, didn’t achieve my love.

Level 3 – Sweat and Toil

1

My heart told me, furtively
What happened, so furtively…

Why does the earth and the sky seem so new?
When I asked, the crazy winds told me
Falling in love, that’s what’s happened…

2

Was it your fault, or was it my fault?

Was it your pride, or was it my pride?

God, I won’t have been so evil,

Had you not been infidel to me

Just tell me this, what did you achieve

By laying these thorns of sorrow on my way?

3

As far as my vision goes, it’s as if it’s raining light

Why do all path seem bedecked, why are beautiful flowers blooming?

Beautiful scents are flowing in the air

I know now what these heart beats are saying

Oh my heart, tell me, what is this story?

Why does the wind seem to be singing this way…

4

Again, every particle will be fragrant

Seasons of fragrance will arrive

Again, on the branches of trees,

birds will make their houses

Those who travel on these paths

Will turn and come back again

Again, in the streets of heaven

Everybody will sing this song

Level 3 – Songs 2 and 3 are from the “Antara” of the song.

Nikunj treats whoever cracks song 2.

Antariksh treats whoever gets song 4.

Bon courage!
